Design Guidelines and Application ScenariosThe loading of the manhole cover or grating depends on the installation location

The different installation positions are divided into groups numbered 1 to 6.

Figure.1 shows where these groups are installed in a highway environment.

A15 First Group

Manhole cover and gully grating capable of withstanding 1.5 tons of experimental load. Applicable only to areas accessible by pedestrians and cyclists.

B125 Second Group

Manhole cover and gully grating capable of withstanding a test load of 12.5 tons. Suitable for car parks and pedestrian areas with occasional vehicle access.

C250 Third Group

Manhole cover and gully grating capable of withstanding 25 tons of experimental load. Suitable for the area from the edge of the road to the carriageway.

D400 The Fourth Group

Manhole cover and gully grating capable of withstanding 40 tons of experimental load. Suitable for use in areas accessible by cars and trucks, including roadways, shoulders and pedestrian areas.

E600 The Fifth Group

Manhole cover and gully grating capable of withstanding 60 tons of experimental load. Suitable for areas where heavy wheel loads are applied such as loading bays, docks or flight pavements.

F900 Sixth Group

Manhole cover and gully grating capable of withstanding 90 tons of experimental load. For use in areas where very heavy wheel loads are applied, such as aircraft pavements.

The European standard for manhole covers and gully grating is BSEN124-2015. In this standard, SMC material manhole covers are regulated for the first time, and manhole covers and gully grating are divided into several grades according to the static test load. It also categorizes the different locations where they might be installed, from Group 1 (the least demanding environment) to Group 6 (the most demanding environment). It provides guidance on the minimum grade to use for each installation group.All the manhole covers on the market that can overload multiple vehicles as a standard are mixed concepts, causing casualties.

Manhole Cover/Gully Grating Installation Guide

This installation guide specifies the working procedures for the installation of manhole cover/ gully grating as specified in BS EN124 standard. Operators shall be provided with necessary technical training by an appropriate training institution to meet the standards required by the performance specification. Mechanical mixing of the bedding material is preferred, although manual mixing is permitted. If cementitious material is used, the moisture content recommended by the manufacturer must be used. In case of any doubt, please contact the respective manufacturer for clarification.
It is the operator's responsibility to ensure that the supporting structure is in sufficient strength and condition to support the load bearing of the manhole cover/grating and base.

Installation Guide For Manhole Covers/Water Grates

This installation guide specifies the work procedures for installing manhole covers/rainwater grates as specified in BS EN124 standard specifications. Necessary technical training should be provided to operators by appropriate training institutions to meet the standards required by performance specifications. Although manual mixing is allowed, mechanical mixing of cushion materials is preferred. If bonding materials are used, the manufacturer's recommended moisture content must be used.

If there are any doubts, the corresponding manufacturer should be contacted for clarification.
The operator is responsible for ensuring that the supporting structure has sufficient strength and conditions to support the bearing capacity of the manhole cover/water grate and base.

Saw the surrounding existing cover & frame and clear them.

Remove debris, loose brick and old mortar and ensure all surfaces are clean.

Place a layer of cushion mortar on the bricklaying according to the manufacturer's instructions, generally between 25mm and 40mm. Ensure sufficient coverage to adequately contact the underside of the entire base, make sure the base is level with the finished surface. Ram the base into the bedding mortar and adjust the base to the desired level.

The base is fitted with a mortar level, special care must be taken to ensure that the base is fully encapsulated to this level, especially in the corner areas.
Note: Polyester bed mortar should be HAPAS/BBA certified.

Once the bedding mortar has set, backfill with a suitable mortar according to the contractor's instructions.

Apply bitumen tack coat or edge sealant to all exposed edges and new base.

Apply surface coating; wear layer/pavement material.
Be careful not to affect the flatness of the ground, especially where mechanical equipment is used.

Apply an overlay at the junction between the new surface material and the existing surface. If using an asphalt-based surfacing material, please note: According to the applicator's instructions, it is important to cover any saw cuts that extend beyond the restoration area.
